Introduction to the Tajul Masajid

The Tajul Masajid located in Bhopal city is a great achievement of Shah Jahan Begum. She initiated this mammoth project on Muharram 28, 1305 AH (1887 AD) with a vision of making this mosque the greatest and most exquisite of the mosques, according its name ‘Tajul Masajid which literally means ‘Crown of the Mosques’. The scholarly and religious importance of the mosque was respected in such a way that the surrounding properties of the mosque area were also acquired under the campus. The mosque compound is extremely spacious; on one side of the campus was the seminary where memorization of the Quran took place and the other side of the campus was dedicated for Aalimiat purpose. Shah Jahan Begum started with this vision that the mosque will serve as a place of learning and will be an excellent contribution to the world for Islamic Religious Education and Awareness.

It is one of the largest masjids in the Islamic world, the largest masjid in India, resembling the famous Jama Masjid in Delhi, but is one-third larger, and has three storeys.

Inside the mosque, the number of northern, southern and eastern compound rooms are 120 with an area of 8.5 × 13 square feet each.

 

In the middle of the courtyard of the mosque is an elevated platform of pool of water for ablution purposes whose area is 58 × 58 square feet.

 

There are four pools in the north and eastern corners of the courtyard with an area of 85 × 85 square feet.

 

Full length of the mosque from east to west is 526 feet.
